The Windsor Knot

The Windsor Knot is a thick, wide and triangular tie knot that projects confidence. This is a traditional tie knot often seen on men of status. It is the knot of choice for business presentations, job interviews, courtroom appearances and other important events. You will feel like royalty when you wear the Windsor Knot, as the House of Windsor is another name for Great Britain’s royal family.

The Windsor Knot is best suited to spread collar shirts. While just about any man can use this tie knot on his tie, it looks especially good on men with longer necks as its wide form shortens the perceived height of the neck a little bit. The technique is actually quite easy. ~Tying a Windsor Knot

To tie the Windsor Knot, select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Put the tie around your neck on top of your buttoned shirt. Lift up the shirt collar.

The wide end of the tie should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end. Cross the wide end over the narrow end.

Bring the wide end of the tie up through the loop between the collar and the tie and then pull it back down. Pull the wide end underneath the narrow end and to the left, going back through the loop and to the left again so that the wide end is now inside out.

Bring the wide end of the across the front of your body from left to right. Pull the wide end up through the loop again. Bring the wide end down through the knot in front of your neck.

Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to your collar. Then fold the collar down over the tie. If you have followed these directions on how to tie a tie exactly, you are now looking quite sharp and are ready for whatever business engagement you might have.

Once you have grasped tie tying, you may want to teach your son how to do it. Remember that you will have to stand behind him while showing him how to tie a tie as everything will be reversed from the normal method if you try to stand in front of him. He will also benefit from seeing the procedure in the mirror as your hands move through the tie tying steps.

For a change, you might try some other knots. Some might be more appropriate when wearing a button-down shirt. Look online for illustrated instructions to learn other tie tying methods.Tying a Windsor Knot
