Start finding your own men’s clothing style to create personal fashion looks

It’s a common misconception that all men are less fashion-conscious than women. That’s simply not true ? some men are extremely aware of what they are wearing and how they appear. But, the clich? does have some truth to it, as many men couldn’t care less about what they put on in the morning, as long as it’s clean.

We live in a rural community, where rugged men’s clothing like sturdy work jeans and quilted flannel shirts are considered appropriate office attire. The only time I’ve seen my husband in a tie is on our wedding day. It is easy to get into a rut where fashion is concerned, but there is more to men’s clothing than simply outdoor clothing. Finding your own men’s clothing style may not come naturally to you, but it’s not impossible.

Putting together a wardrobe

No one has to tell you to have enough jeans, t-shirts, and sweatshirts on hand, because those are the clothes most men feel comfortable in. It can be easy to vary your style, though, with just a few simple additions.

Believe it or not, men’s pants do come in a variety of fabrics, and not just in denim. Pick up some khakis, corduroys or cotton trousers in neutral colors: tan, gray, and navy. These pants are perfect for the office or for going out in the evenings. They’re not too formal, and most are as comfortable as a pair of jeans.

Now you need some shirts, preferably not t-shirts and not shirts that advertise your favorite band. Because you have some neutral color pants, it’s easy to get some long and short-sleeve polo shirts or cotton button-up shirts to match. If you don’t know what colors you should wear, ask one of the women in your life. Chances are, she’ll know what colors look best on you.

Dressing up

Every man should have a quality suit that fits comfortably. You may think you’ll never wear it, but there are occasions when a suit is called for, like weddings and funerals. And dressing up for an evening out will really impress your wife or girlfriend, especially if it’s not your standard operating procedure to wear a tie.

The best way to get a good fit in a suit is to go to a men’s department in a department store, and ask for help. The sales associate should be able to tell you how the coat should fit, how the trousers should break over your shoes, and what size you need. Most men’s departments also offer minor tailoring and adjustments, so you can get an individual fit.

Make sure the suit is comfortable. If it feels stiff or unnatural, chances are you won’t even take it out of the closet. It may not be as comfortable as the stuff you’re used to wearing, but it shouldn’t feel like you’re in a straight jacket, either.

Once you have made these simple additions to your wardrobe, you’re well on your way to an individual men’s clothing style.
