A pin-up girl is a model whose mass-produced photos are widely appealing and become a part of the popular culture of the time.
Betty Grable was the first pin-up girl. Her picture was a favorite of GIs stationed overseas who were homesick for their lovers. The term pin-up is used because the pictures were pinned up on walls or in lockers where they could be looked at regularly.
