Moving can be a stressful time for adults but for children it can be downright unnerving.
If they are young, they can be confused as to what is happening and, if they are older, they can be upset about leaving the familiarity of their school and friends. Try some of the following pointers and moving with children can go a little smoother.
10. Talk
Tell your kids all about the new place, whether it’s down the street or across the country. Talk about the weather, the color of the house, why you picked it, what you think they will like about it, anything and everything. And, then tell them again. And, again.
9. Map It Out
Children as young as three and four understand a map of the United States. Use your map to show them where you are moving to and the route you will take to get there when the time comes.
8. Familiar Linens
If you will be staying at a hotel along the way, consider bringing along familiar bed linens. Sleeping in a strange place can be a little easier when the blanket and pillow feel like home.
7. Ask
Touch base with your child and ask them if they are excited, nervous or downright scared. Being able to talk about their feelings can help ease their mind.
6. Set Up Their Room 1st
Upon arrival, it may be tempting to set up the public rooms first when unpacking, but make an effort to set up the kids’ rooms first. The sooner it feels more like home, the better.
5. Head to the Library
If you will be moving with children to a new state or country, head to your local library and reserve some books to read about your new home.
4. Reassure
As a parent, you have a million and one things going through your head. Will the cable guy actually show up? Did I tell the movers which box had my mother’s china in it? When can I sleep? When moving with children, just be sure to take the time to reassure your child that the move is what is best for your family and that they will love the new place.
3. Visit in Advance
If you can, visit your new home in advance. Much of the time, fear of the unknown can make moving with children stressful. If they know where they are headed, it is that much easier.
2. Online
One of the coolest things to do online is to use the “street view” or “bird’s eye view” offered at online mapping sites and live GPS systems. You can see your new house and walk down your street “virtually”.
1. Expect the Best, Prepare for the Worst
Putting a smile on your face and anticipating that everyone will be thrilled is important, just plan on a few, unexpected bumps along the road. If you are prepared for a meltdown or two and remain calm, it will go much smoother overall. Good luck.
