Basic Single Crochet Dishcloth
Materials 2 ounces worsted weight cotton yarn, any color Size G crochet hook
Finished size 10 1/2 inches x 9 1/2 inches If yours ends up smaller or larger, that’s no problem; it doesn’t really matter for a dishcloth. Any size is fine. This is one of the more simple crocheting projects and a great one to start your daughter on.
Gauge 3 1/2 single crochet = 1 inch 4 single crochet rows = 1 inch Gauge is not that important for this pattern but it’s included it in case you want to get used to checking your gauge. (Gauge would be important for clothing or other fitted items where your finished crocheted item needs to end up the same size as the designer crocheted them. So with those types of items your gauge needs to match more closely the gauge of the designer.)
To start: Leave about a six inch length of yarn before the first loop of your starting chain. Leave this length hanging while you are crocheting the dishcloth. You will weave this length in when the dishcloth is finished. (This is a good way to secure the end so it won’t unravel.)
Starting chain 36. Note: At the end of each row, you will chain 1, and then turn the work around to start the next row. Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in each chain across. (35 single crochet) Row 2: Single crochet in each single crochet across. (35 single crochet) Rows 3 – 38: Repeat row 2. End off, leaving a length of about 6 inches to weave in. Weave in the ends*, using a large-eye yarn needle.
*How to Weave in Ends When doing your starting chain, always leave a length of about six inches or so before your first loop of starting chain. This length is woven in when you are finished with your project, so that the end will be secured to guard against unraveling over time. Also leave a length at the end of your project or at any time that you join a new skein because you have run out of yarn or are joining a new color. ~When you have finished any of your crocheting projects and have cut your yarn, leaving a length of about six inches, end off means to draw the last length of yarn through the loop remaining on the hook. Draw this tight. After you have threaded this yarn length on the large-eye yarn needle, you can use the needle to draw the yarn back through the last loop again to make an extra knot if you wish to, before weaving this yarn length in. Use a large-eye yarn needle. Thread the yarn end onto the needle and weave the needle under stitches for at least two inches. Pull the yarn through. Then, skipping half of the last stitch woven under, weave back through the same stitches for about one inch or so. Pull yarn through. Cut the yarn close to last stitch woven under, so end will “hide” under this last stitch.
