If you are like me you love nothing more than ending the day with a good television show and some nice snacks, usually something salty.

Unfortunately, due to health concerns, it is imperative that you watch your salt intake. In this list of the top ten alternatives to salty snacks I will list some great ways to satisfy your salt craving without raising your blood pressure!

10. Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries are a good alternative to regular french fries because they do not require a dose of salt to add flavor. Sweet potato fries have their own natural flavor profiles that is sweet with a bit of a savory aftertaste.

9. Hummus and Veggies

Hummus is a great low-sodium option for those who do not want to sacrifice any flavor. Hummus is low in both fat and sodium and contains a significant dose of vitamins and protein.

8. Kale Chips

Kale chips come in a variety of flavors and provide the crunchy tastiness of chips without all of the carbs, calories and sodium. Some find the taste to be a bit off putting at first, but after a couple of bites most find them to be quite pleasant (in my experience). Of course these chips also come with the health benefits of kale, one of the few foods universally considered a superfood.

7. Low/No Salt Potato Chips

One easy way to lower your sodium intake while still enjoying chips is buy, low or no salt added potato chips. I personally recommend the baked ones which also have the benefit of being cooked without fats or oils. You won’t even miss the salt!

6. Almonds

Nuts such as cashews, almonds, and peanuts are very satisfying snacks even without added sodium. Try some spiced with black pepper or unique seasoning blends.

5. Avocado Slices

Avocado slices are loaded with healthy fats and nutrients. Slices of avocado make for great snacks and party platters and can be seasoned without sodium to add spice or sweetness.

4. Olives

Olives are a crave-able snack that come in a variety of flavors and types. Some olives are sweet and other a bit sour, some are served fresh and others pickled. The great thing about olives is that there is a kind for every taste!

3. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter, especially the all-natural low sugar kind, is a great way to get your savory fix without reaching for salty snacks. You can put it on crackers, fruit, veggies or eat it right off the spoon!

2. Seeds

Baked sunflower and pumpkin seeds are another enjoyable alternative to less healthy munchies. Just make sure to buy the unsalted ones or you will end up ingesting just about as much salt as you would with standard potato or corn chips.

1. Pickles

Good old pickles are always a favorite at gatherings and can be served as a side dish or an appetizer. Pickles are also a good source of probiotics and antioxidants.

Ingesting too much sodium has been positively linked to a number of serious health problems over the years including high blood pressure, heart disease and even strokes. These healthier alternatives are a great way to enjoy snack time without the guilt!
